Fentanyl is a powerful synthetic opioid that is similar to morphine but is 50 to 100 times more potent. It is a prescription drug that is also made and used illegally.
The governor declared an opioid state of emergency in 2017 because of the number of people overdosing. Since then, tracking has been in place to record the types of substances in overdoses as well as the number of overdoses. What the data shows is that fentanyl involved overdoses has more than doubled from 2018 to 2020.

This Law was passed in AZ in 2018.
It protects a person in the event they need to receive aid or render aid as a result of a drug-related overdose.
Arizona Revised Statutes (ARS) 13-3423 states:
A. A person who, in good faith, seeks medical assistance for Someone experiencing a drug-related overdose may not be charged with or Prosecuted for the possession or use of a controlled substance or drug Paraphernalia if the evidence for the violation was gained as a result of Seeking medical assistance.
B. A person who experiences a drug-related overdose and who is in Need of medical assistance may not be charged with or prosecuted for the Possession or use of a controlled substance or drug paraphernalia if the Evidence for the violation was gained as a result of the overdose and the Need for medical assistance.
